Alberto Ruiz Villar
Geometria Estratificada — Mapes, Cicatrius i Estructures Provisional
BIO

Ruiz Villar's work is created around time as the most powerful sign of fear. Maps explained under the effects of scars. Scars as a representation of what we learned from injuries. Their plastic path shows that there is nowhere to go and no rest. The map changes as much as the reality, so there is no peace. And so it must be. Ruiz's work affirms that we should never find certainty.

This composition reveals another side of Alberto Ruiz Villar’s practice. While he maintains his characteristic proportional logic, he alters it through subtle operations: halving certain shapes, doubling others, and shifting their placement within the grid. These variations create a more active rhythm, and the geometry appears almost suspended simply because the entire system begins unusually close to the center of the frame. The work carries a distinct sense of process, an openness that invites the viewer to perceive the construction of the piece, without ever abandoning the structural rigor that defines his practice. It’s not a departure from proportion, but a reconfiguration of it, a way of loosening the system without breaking it.
This new painting by Catalan artist Alberto Ruiz Villar forms part of a series of three large-format works (150 × 150 cm), each exploring rhythm, color, and architectural abstraction through calibrated shifts in scale and proportion.

This painting by Alberto Ruiz Villar shows a different rhythm than the previous piece. Although it shares the same size — 150 × 150 cm — its composition is based on a five-part grid instead of six. This shift transforms the geometry into a kind of kinetic mechanism, where scars leave a visible trace of movement and the contrasting colors emphasize the junctions between its parts.

This painting by Alberto Ruiz Villar is structured as a geometric three-way interplay between elemental forms, modern color, and abstraction. The composition is built around three circular forms and a set of rectangular fields that function as the grid of the work, organizing the relationship between each shape and the surrounding space.
Each circle, color block, and rectangular container reveals Alberto’s careful command of color relationships, balancing soft tonalities with stronger chromatic accents. A drawn triangle connects the three circular forms, creating an internal tension that guides the viewer’s eye across the composition.
As usual, Alberto “builds” the painting with a strong regard for proportion. Yet the work does not hide its construction: layering, scratches, surface marks, stains, and painterly traces remain visible throughout the piece. These elements give the painting a sense of visible process and deliberate openness. Rather than appearing unfinished, the composition remains provisional, open to continuity, time, and further interpretation.

This painting by Alberto Ruiz, part of the Matiz Gallery autumn exhibition, features an irregular light pink pentagon juxtaposed with contrasting geometric forms. The interplay of red, pink, blue, green, and white creates a “functional” composition. The texture, created by scarring the canvas surface, adds a sense of dramatization to the piece.

This 150 × 150 cm painting by Alberto Ruiz Villar shows the artist working on a larger format than usual. This scale gives space for a more intricate play of Alberto’s conceptual and visual language: the arches, the consistent proportions that appear throughout his work, and a palette that oscillates between mint greens, pastel reds, and tonalities of royal and cadet blues. Together, these elements create a dialogue between architecture, design, and art. His paintings reject finality and always leave space for continuity.

This small painting by Alberto Ruiz Villar reveals another way in which his work balances color, form, and abstraction. The composition is built around two circular forms and a large grey field, which comes from a real accident with spray paint during the making of the piece.
Rather than hiding or correcting the accident completely, Alberto incorporates it into the structure of the painting. In this sense, the work relates to his usual process of scratching and marking the surface, but in an almost opposite way. Instead of exposing the layers beneath, the grey spray creates a veil over part of the composition, turning the accident into a new compositional element.
The piece gives direct access to Alberto’s process: decisions, accidents, corrections, and coverings remain visible within the final image. It does not present the painting as a closed or perfectly resolved surface, but as a provisional composition shaped by color, geometry, and chance.

Painting from Alberto Ruiz Villar 2022
One-of-a-Kind Artwork with an Authenticity Certificate
This 2021 painting by Alberto Ruiz Villar is built around the interaction of two grids. Within this structure, Alberto balances a large circular form with a series of vertical rectangles, creating a composition where geometry, proportion, and color remain carefully interdependent.
Using whites and greys as a quiet background, he introduces pastel tones and subtle variations of yellow, while a rose-red accent and a strong teal blue mark the two main registers of the painting. These chromatic tensions give the work a sense of rhythm, separating the composition into different visual levels without breaking its overall balance.
As in much of Alberto’s work, the painting reveals its own construction: traces, layers, drawn lines, and surface marks remain visible, giving the piece a sense of process and openness rather than a closed or overly polished finish.
